Say that ten times fast. Since this rumor has entered its second day, I'm going to muse morosely about it (how many grammatical rules did I break there? If not, did I misuse the its when I should have it'sed?). Manny may end up being Manny in the left field at dodger stadium. I'm seriously doubting this comes to pass, but it's written about over here at si.com. At last! A convergence of news events between my brother in laws team and mine!
Alright, so here's guys the Red Sox might want. Keep in mind that Manny's demand that his option be declined by any team that takes him in trade as a condition of his waiving his no trade clause hurts his trade value, so no getting the moon for Manny under this scenario. Derek Lowe would seem like a good piece to get back as he's both a solid pitcher, and versatile. The sox have a good rotation and pen, but you can never have enough pitching and Lowe is one of those guys that thrives in postseason play. He could also come into the game in relief in high leverage situations and induce some ground balls if crap hit the fan in any game.
A need the Sox have had for a while has been shortstop. Lowrie seems to be the shortstop of the future, but when you've had the sox luck at the position, you may want an extra premium shortstop prospect lest the red sox impulsively trade one away. The dodgers may be willing to provide them with that. Their shortstop prospects are pretty solid. They would probably prefer Ivan DeJesus Jr. because of his ability to get on base, but may have to settle for Chin-Lung Hu who's defense is great but who's offense is questionable. I think at this point Sox fans don't mind a defensive shortstop that can't hit after a few seasons of watching Lugo do neither offense or defense well.
They might gamble on taking the aging Jeff Kent. They can plop him down over at first base, and move Youkilis to left field. I don't know how viable Youks is in the outfield, but I've seen that he's played there. He's gotta be a defensive improvement over Manny.
Something the sox don't need this second but will need in the future (Boston and Varitek will probably part ways this winter) is a catcher. The dodgers could help with that by including catching prospect Lucas May. The dodgers are decent at developing catchers, so May should be the real deal. He's already on the dodgers 40 man roster and at 23 years old, he should be close to MLB ready.
The pill that the sox are probably going to have to swallow is having to receive Andruw Jones back in the deal. This is why I don't think the deal happens, but hey, maybe the Sox have a brighter idea nobody else has considered.
A pill the dodgers might have happily swallowed were he healthy is Julio Lugo. The dodgers need a shortstop...again. Nomar got hurt...again. Surprise, surprise. The Sox would much rather expand the deal to include Lugo if the dodgers were sticking to the Sox needing to take Andruw Jones and then get even more young players out of L.A.
About those young players. Instead of who the sox could use it makes more sense to think of what the braves would want. They would probably want DeWitt and LaRoche. I don't think the dodgers would give up LaRoche, but might give up DeWitt. LaRoche could play third for the rest of this season and replace Chipper should he retire this winter. He could also replace the outgoing Teixeira at first base. Beyond DeWitt or LaRoche, Lucas May, and maybe one of pitchers Miller and maybe Stults or McDonald. I don't see the dodgers going any further for a rental. Miller is pretty much a fringe prospect now but McDonald is a solid prospect who probably ends up being a 4'th starter at his peak. But if the sox don't take Andruw Jones, they're not getting DeWitt at all and most likely not even LaRoche. They'll still get the more average prospects like Miller, Stults, and McDonald.
What would I do...hmmm...I'd assume the sox want nothing to do with Kent, are willing to take back Jones just so they don't have to start Crisp and have a better arm in center field, and like the dodgers catching prospect. So Andruw Jones, Lucas May, Blake DeWitt, Eric Stults, and Greg Miller for Manny Ramirez and cash considerations (1.5 million of the balance of Manny's salary this year). DeWitt, Miller, and Stults probably don't get a Teixeira deal done for the sox, but it's a good start. Stults is a solid lefty 5'th starter type who's cheap and in his prime. He's not sexy, but he'll give decent innings for the rest of the year for the braves. Miller has a great arm but suffers from wildness so if he somehow puts it together he could be an excellent set up man or closer. DeWitt is a former first round pick who played lights out for a month in the majors after being called up from double a. He's picking it back up in triple a vegas right now since the Casey Blake trade. Hell the braves may want Jones back if the sox paid a good bit of his salary. I'm going to stop now because my brain is frying.
