Biggi-uh-oh

Charley Steiner continued to belabor the story of Biggio having announced his intention to retire at the end of the season. Charley's belaboring ended up kicking the dodgers in the nuts when Biggio hit a grand slam off a gas can to ruin a decent showing by The Lurch and the dodgers' offense up to that point. It looked bad from the first pitch by Seanez. If I'd been watching the game with an uninitiated five year old I'm sure I'd have been asked, 'Why is dat guy tu-wowing the ball all ovuh da pwace?' As the manager what do you do though? Eric Hull was out there later seemingly in comic relief as he was throwing the ball to the backstop like fictional pitcher Rick Vaughn, so he may not have even been a good option (even though he actually got people out). I was frustrated enough to take him out after the first walk if I were the manager. Grady might have felt this way as well but since he knows more than I do about how tired the rest of the bullpen was I give him the benefit of the doubt. What was worse was that Seanez actually got two cheap outs and still couldn't get himself throwing strikes.

These kinds of losses are why the Jonathan Meloan callup seems well overdue to me. Why trade potentially good young players for the Octavio Dotels or Scott Proctors of the world when you can just call up one of your own young whelps and break him? I know he's not on the 40-man roster yet but the guy's ceiling is as a reliever and the team needs a fresh arm like Tyrone Biggums needs another hit. Ned Colletti doesn't exactly worry me in trading for a reliever as he hasn't ever given up anyone that turned it around but he gives up too much for guys that usually just end up sucking for the dodgers (Danys Baez, Lance Carter, Jae Weong Seo, Tim Hamulack...etc.).
