So the dodgers were losing pretty badly two weeks ago that pissed me off enough not to post. Just as quickly, they ignited and burned through opponents like a SoCal forest fire. The hottest of them all arguably was Matt Kemp, who was recently named NL player of the week. So now I wasn't posting so as not to jinx them on their win streak. Well now they've lost a few days ago and won the next game right away last night.
So now that I can't be jinxing, here's a few thoughts:
Billingsley's stuff looked great, and he seemed a heck of a lot more confident in himself. His curve was really missing bats and his two seamer was hitting its spots low in the zone. Most importantly, no fifth inning meltdown.
It was extremely exciting to watch Martin play third base. It just underscores the fact that the guy is just a very exciting and enthusiastic player no matter where he plays.
The outfield situation is getting kind of weird as everyone except the 36 million dollar man that was supposed to save the dodgers with his power is the only guy not producing. Ethier again is getting the short end of the stick.
I don't know whether Andruw Jones has just lost it or is just going through a really, really bad slump. With the dodgers winning despite his struggles, I guess he's got more of a leash to get himself out of it than he might have otherwise. Hopefully management is smart enough to trade Pierre as soon as someone asks about him while he's playing well. Center fielders are fragile and some team may soon see themselves without anyone to play there and jump at Pierre with the hopes he doesn't turn back into a pumpkin.
It would really be for the best as Delwyn Young doesn't look like he's cut out to be a pinch hitter at age 25. He could use more regular at-bats to show one way or another whether he can be a fourth outfielder. If not, you go to Jason Repko. The dodgers don't need a great fourth outfielder with the very durable outfielders they have. Ethier has never been injured. Jones is also a workhorse although he's not carrying much weight right now. Kemp has no significant injury history except that shoulder scare last season. So there's just not that much time to give to a fourth outfielder.
Blake DeWitt hit his first homer last night. It was funny to see the silent treatment he got, which almost entirely mimicked the video game cinematic in MLB The Show '07 and '08 where the player walks back into the dugout to everyone ignoring him until he reaches the end of the bench and his entire team mobs him. The homer went to dead center and it got there quickly. Beltran didn't even make an attempt at catching it. It was a good night for him especially after his embarrassing start where he made a couple of errors in one inning and just couldn't seem to do anything right. Maybe they can try to get DeWitt to play second...
Nah, there's probably a good reason he was moved off second in the minors...
