Another post involving my most favorite player that isn't in a dodgers uniform. The Boston Herald highlights the center field situation and reiterates that the organization hasn't yet reached a conclusion on who's going to be starting there opening day. I've got to predict that barring a bizarrely impotent spring training or an injury to Ellsbury, that he's going to be the Red Sox starting center fielder in '08. Coco's gotta go, the Red Sox are just choosing it to be later rather than sooner. I think it's because there's too much supply and therefore not so much demand. You would think the Padres would want him instead of putting all their balls into the glove of the old and brittle Jim Edmonds. I don't think the Red Sox would be demanding anything back, but they probably don't want to have to shell out much cash to ship him out. The A's could use him but they have the same problems as the Padres in that they have tight budget constraints and not much to send back. The Braves could use him as who knows what Kotsay is going to give them. The Cards could use anybody that can catch the ball in the outfield. Also add in the Pirates, White Sox, Reds, and maybes for the Twins and Royals. So it's mostly small market teams with a few exceptions, and with what Crisp already makes, he's a hard sell to most of those teams unless the Red Sox are willing to pay big bucks to ship him out. The Sox can only hope a few center fielders get injured during spring training to create a need from some teams that do have the bucks to absorb all of Crisp's salary.
As my father-in-law would likely comment to that idea in deadpan,
"Good luck with that."
